Fall is.......a great time to check your hot tub cover!

Your hot tub cover is a very important part of your hot tub!  Kind of like the roof on your house!  And, you’ll want to make sure your cover is in great working condition so your hot tub is protected and ready to use during the winter months.

Here are a few tips for cleaning and maintaining your hot tub cover:

Keep it clear and free of debris such as branches, leaves, snow or ice.  Carefully lift branches from the cover rather than dragging them to avoid scraping and tearing the surface. When clearing snow, use a soft bristle brush.

Wipe it down regularly to keep it looking new and shiny!  Make sure to use a soft towel or sponge and a cleaner made for marine vinyl.

Use a vinyl protectant to minimize cracking and fading.

Check for rips or tears. If you notice rips or damage, contact your Nordic Dealer for advice on how to best repair the cover skin.

Check the stitching to make sure there are no frayed areas or gaps.  If you notice areas that are coming loose or where stitches have broken, contact your Nordic Dealer for advice on how best to repair.

When you are finished using your hot tub, make sure the straps are always buckled for safety and security.

Using a cover lifter helps keep the cover free from damage and debris.  If you would like more information on cover lifters, click here. To order, contact your Nordic Dealer.

Maintaining your hot tub water chemistry is an important part of cover maintenance!  If your hot tub water chemistry is not balanced properly, it could damage the vapor barrier and lead to water logging and damage.

If your cover feels much heavier than it used to, it may be water logged.  Contact your Nordic Dealer for a replacement.

As always, leave the hot tub uncovered for 30 minutes to an hour after adding chemicals to the water.  This will help keep your cover free from chemical damage.

Remember, with just a little TLC you can extend the life expectancy of your cover!  A good preventative maintenance routine will keep your hot tub and cover looking good and working great for years!

Time For Some TLC!

Posted in Tips & Tricks

cleaning item
It’s September and, in Michigan, the weather is certainly reminding us that it’s time to give your hot tub some TLC before winter!

Now is a good time to drain and thoroughly clean your hot tub.  Check the cover, chemicals, filters, test strips, filter, etc. to make sure everything is fresh and in great working order before we head into the cold winter months.

Here is a quick and simple checklist for you to follow to make sure your hot tub is ready for those great winter soak sessions:

1.       Turn the power off to your hot tub at the breaker box.  You don’t want the pump to kick on when there is no water in the tub.

2.       Drain your hot tub. Take a good look at your tub without water in it and call your dealer for service, if needed.

3.       Wipe the entire hot tub out with a tub cleaner.  There are many products on the market.  Contact your local dealer for their recommendations. If there are white water lines a solution of white vinegar and water (50/50) should remove them.

4.       Deep clean your filter or purchase a new one.  Click here for more information on deep cleaning your filter.

5.       Clean the cover with a marine vinyl cleaner and a UV protectant. There are many vinyl cleaning and UV protectant products on the market, just make sure you are using one that is specifically formulated for vinyl.

6.       Rinse off the PermaWood cabinet and clean with a soft cloth. If you have a Natural Cedar cabinet, check to see if it needs some attention.

7.       Check the expiration dates on your chemicals and test strips…yes, they have a shelf life!  Is it time to purchase new ones?

8.       Refill your hot tub, turn the power back on, balance your water and enjoy!

Remember, the best maintenance for your Nordic Hot Tub is routine hot tub care and water chemistry!

If you have questions about any of the suggested items on the checklist, contact your local Nordic Dealer.  They have all the right products, give great advice, and can work with you to schedule maintenance or a repair service call.

Deep Cleaning Your Hot Tub Filter

Posted in Tips & Tricks

Filter removing from housing SM
A clean filter will help keep your hot tub water clean, clear and ready to use!  Proper cleaning of your hot tub filter will also lessen strain on the hot tub equipment.  Just like an air filter in your car or the filter in your home furnace, the cleaner your hot tub filter is, the better everything works.  If you are experiencing error codes or the hot tub doesn't seem to have the  jet force it once did, start by thoroughly cleaning the filter.

A typical hot tub filter cartridge is made from a pleated or folded fabric with millions of microscopic pores through which water flows. The job of this filter is to keep your hot tub water clean by catching debris and oily contaminants before they circulate into your pump or recycle into your water.  Over time the filter pores can become 'full' or clogged and will need to be cleaned.

Rinsing the filter cartridge with a garden hose is a good way to remove large or loose debris, like leaves and dirt.  However, rinsing is only a superficial cleaning and will not remove oils embedded in the fabric of the filter.  To thoroughly clean the filter, use a Filter Cleaner product made specifically for the job as it will dissolve the buildup of oils and greases.

Our recommendation is to chemically clean the filter cartridge every 4-6 weeks.  This will clear the pleated fabric of debris and trapped oils and allow the filter to work more efficiently.  While every 4-6 weeks is an optimum cleaning schedule, at the very minimum you should chemically clean your hot tub filter every time you drain and refill your hot tub, which we reommend doing at least twice a year.  As with every chemical you use in your hot tub, please read and follow the instruction printed on the Filter Cleaner container.

It's a good idea to have a second filter cartridge for your hot tub.  We recommend this for two reasons:

First, you should let your filter dry completely between cleaning and replacing it into your hot tub.  This allows the fibers in the pleated material to dry out and rest before being used again.

Second, it will allow you to continue to safely operate and enjoy your hot tub while the other filter is being cleaned.

Remember, the average life expectancy of a filter cartridge is 2-3 years.  Replacement may be necessary if your hot tub continues to have issues even after cleaning.  A good visual reference as to when to replace the filter is when the band separeting the filter pleats falls off.

As always, if you have questions about your hot tub or maintenance, don't hesitate to ask your Nordic Dealer.

Filter Cartridges By Model 2017
What filter cartridge should you use for your Nordic Hot Tub?

The answer is, it varies.

Hang on....that's kind of a vague answer!  Isn't Nordic committed to keeping things simple?

YES WE ARE!  Although 'it varies' sounds like a vague answer, it really is in keeping with our STAR Philosophy of Simplicity and here's why:

We limit the number of filter cartridge sizes we use to just a few so it isn't an Easter Egg hunt when you need to replace your cartridge.  Also, we selected the filter cartridge sizes for optimum fit and filtration of each model hot tub.

If you are in doubt which filter to re-order for your Nordic Hot Tub, you can either contact your local dealer or, download our Filter Cartridge Guide to decide what you need.

Backyard Living - Fire Pits

Posted in Backyard Living

FirepitFire….one of the 5 classical elements with which the Ancient Greeks explained the nature of all things.

Primal. Hypnotic. Romantic. Captivating. Fire draws us in.

It is also a great complement to a hot tub! The addition of a fire pit to your backyard gives you the juxtaposition of the elements, fire and water.  It can bring your personal oasis space to the next level.

If you decide to add a firepit, there are 2 very important considerations before you purchase or begin building.

First, familiarize yourself with the local ordinances and building codes governing open fire in your area.  In some places open flame is not legal so, it’s best to check first before committing to any
 contract or purchase

The second consideration is safety.  You quite literally do not want to play with fire here!  Especially if you are a DIY-er, a professional consultation is worth the cost you might incur.  A professional will be well-versed in your local codes and will be able to recognize or point out safety issues before you get started. Remember, if in doubt, err on the side of being TOO cautious.

Our friends at All State Insurance have some great backyard fire pit guidelines for you to consider before you’re toasting S’Mores over your fire!

It's Summer!  Hooray!!

While that means we are completely out of our Winter Cold hibernation up in the North, it can mean going into Summer Heat hibernation in warmer climates!

Extremely warm ambient air temperatures can create issues for your hot tub too. After all, a hot tub is a small body of water. If the sunshine and warm temps heat up large bodies of water like lakes and pools, it's only resonable that your hot tub is affected as well.

Ok, so what can you do when the water in your hot tub is too hot?  Not to worry! We have a few Tips & Tricks for you to try before you call your local dealer for a service call.

Ah! You're ready for some quality hot tub time! You open the cover.... hmm, something isn't right ...it doesn't seem to be heating.  What's going on?

There can be a number of reasons why your hot tub isn’t heating but let's check out some basic trouble shooting tips and tricks you can do before you call your Service Tech.

First, is there power to the tub?
For 110 Plug N Plays: Check to make sure your hot tub is plugged in and the GFCI isn’t tripped.  If the GFCI is tripped, push the reset button. If it won’t reset or trips again, call your dealer for service.

For a 220V hook up: Check your breaker box to see if the circuit has tripped. If it is tripped, reset your breaker to the 'on' position. If it won’t reset or trips again, call your dealer for service.

Ok! So now that you have determined you have power, is there an Error Code displayed on your topside control?  Refer to our list of Common Topside Codes: Single Pump Systems or Dual Pump Systems.

Now check to see if the pump is working. Push the button on the topside control to turn on the pump(s). If it doesn’t start, call your dealer for service.

If you have checked the things on this list and the hot tub still isn't heating or working properly, don’t guess or take any chances…call your dealer for service!

Jets On Strike!

Whirlpool Therapy JetForBrochure
Some (or all) of the jets in your hot tub aren't working.  What should you do?

Let's cover some basic trouble shooting Tips & Tricks you can do which might just fix the issue before you call your Service Tech.

First, turn the pump on and turn the flange of each non-working jet to see if it has been turned ‘off’.

Next, turn the Whirlpool Jet  ¼ turn and check if the jets begin to work.

Check to make sure the water level in your tub is above the filter level. If the water level is below the filter level, add water immediately!

Check your filter to make sure it is clean and free of debris.

If you have recently drained and refilled your hot tub, you might have an air lock. Call your dealer for recommendations to remedy this and prevent in the future.

If you have gone through these basic steps and the jets still are not working, call your dealer for service.

The good news is the GFCI is doing its job!  The not-so-good news is that it can be frustrating.  Well, don't fret, we have a couple of basic things for you to try.
