Nineteen years ago, Margaret and Ed Bell were on the edge of an adventure!

Ed was a Sales Manager for a Harley Davidson dealership in Sarasota, Florida.  He owned a home with a pool but began to experience service related issues with the pool.  Ed had the pool serviced multiple times but, in the end, he fixed the pool himself. When friends found out that Ed knew how to service pools, they began to call him to for their own pools.  Ed and Margaret realized there was a lot more pool service work out there if they were willing to take the leap. It was during this time Ed and Margaret were married and the adventure began.

The Bells decided to partner with another local business person to construct the pools, making Adventure Pools more versatile and responsive to their customers’ needs.  The business was growing and things were going well. It was during a visit to an International Pool and Spa Show in Orlando that things changed for Adventure Pools.  Margaret states, “We saw hot tubs for the first time and we were hooked!”  With the addition of the new product lines, they changed the company name to Adventure Hot Tubs and Pools to more aptly reflect the nature of the business. They are happy with their decision and haven’t looked back.

Currently, Adventure Hot Tubs and Pools offers hot tubs and accessories for sale along with the sale and construction of in-ground pools, decks, backyard enclosures and outdoor kitchens.  They have fully trained service technicians on staff to provide service and training to customers long after the sale.  The customer service aspect of the business is something the Bells take very seriously.  “We are always thinking about what the customer experience will be in 5, even 10 years from now” says Margaret.

The Bells feel that being a family owned business sets them apart from their competitors; that it’s a more personal commitment than being a corporately owned retail store.  As local business owners, the Bells have an investment in the community and work to make it a better place.  Margaret states, “We are people oriented and very involved in our community.”

The economic downturn came to the Sarasota area in 2007. “We were a little ahead of the curve on that” Margaret indicates. “We really had to pull back.  It was tough but we hung in there! Currently, [Adventure Hot Tubs and Pools] is doing well. It still can be tough but it’s not as much of a struggle now.” 

Margaret sees a correlation in the rebound of the housing industry and the hot tub industry. “Hot Tub sales typically lag behind home building" she states.  "A typical hot tub purchase is about 2 years after a home is built.” Due to this, Margaret anticipates a steady growth in sales for the rest of this year and well into 2017.

Adventure Hot Tubs and Pools became a Nordic Partner around 6 years ago.  Margaret is very happy with the line and states that her favorite things are the dependability of Nordic hot tubs, the lifetime warranty on the shell and the relationship she has with the people at Nordic.

The advice Margaret has for other dealers is, “Be true to yourself.  The customers will appreciate that.”

Advanced Spas & Pools

In 1991 Kevin DeBrosse decided it was time for a change.  At that time he was working a job unrelated to the spa and pool industry and was approached about purchasing a local pool building and supply company.  DeBrosse, Dan Mullin, and another friend formed a corporation, purchased Mid-Town Pool Builders and changed the name to Advanced Spas & Pools.  The original location is still at 4393 South Dixie Highway in Middletown, Ohio. 

In 1995 they expanded into Cincinnati with their location at 11359 Mostellar Road.  Between the 2 locations they currently have 6 year-round/full-time staff but, that number grows to around 16 employees in the peak pool season.

Advanced Spas & Pools sells, installs and services in-ground and above-ground pools, hot tubs and grills. They also carry all the chemicals and ‘toys’ to make owning a pool or hot tub fun and carefree.

DeBrosse feels that experience sets Advanced Spas & Pools apart from the rest. The average number of years his staff have been working in the industry is approximately 9 years but one team member has been with them since the very beginning. “Our staff not only has experience, they have integrity, training and knowledge” says DeBrosse. “We attend national and manufacturers’ seminars. Plus, our service techs are all accredited!”

Over the course of 25 years, DeBrosse and Mullin have seen ups and downs in the industry.  One of the hardest bumps was the economic crash of 2009.  Advanced Spas & Pools weathered the storm by going into an austerity program. “We cut expenses as much as we could” states DeBrosse. “But, we are building it back!” he quickly adds.

2016 has already promised good gains for Advanced Spas & Pools. DeBrosse has seen growth in all areas of his business and is very optimistic about the economic recovery.

Joining the Nordic Family when Nordic came on the industry scene was a decision DeBrosse has never second guessed. “We don’t have trouble with Nordics” he states. “They [Nordic Hot Tubs] are lightweight and reliable. They are a straight-forward design. Customers love ‘em – we love ‘em and they fit in the smaller size offering that sells well.”

Advice DeBrosse would like to give other dealers is “Don’t get into this business unless you LOVE it!” he says with a laugh. “It’s either in your blood, or it’s not!”

Home Innovations Spas

Home Innovations Spas was founded by Paul Walz in 1990 and has 2 locations.  The store in Lincoln, Nebraska is at 2001 Highway 2 while the store in Omaha, Nebraska is at 13813 Industrial Road.  Employing approximately 8 full time employees, Home Innovations offers hot tubs, swim spas, and a full range of chemicals along with spa accessories.  Walz also services the products they sell and employs 2 fully trained and certified service techs.

Deb Christ, General Manager, says there are a number of qualities that set Home Innovations Spas apart from the rest. “Customer service is the first thing” according to Christ. “Fair pricing is also something we are very aware of. We don’t fluctuate on that very much so when we give a price it’s our very best.”

Having been in the spa industry for over 26 years, Christ feels advertising is always a moving target.  “Knowing the best way to get the word out about our company is very important” she says, “But also we have to pick the best value for our dollar.” With so many advertising options available, Christ knows that narrowing down to the ones that will reach the wider audience is the best choice for them.

Christ is looking forward to continuing their sales growth this year.  What she and Walz have been very excited about is watching their employees step up and grow within their positions. “We continue to emphasize employee training” states Christ.  That gives both herself and Walz a lot more time and freedom to look at the larger picture and develop the longer horizon for Home Innovations Spas.

Becoming a Nordic Partner in 2011 was a great decision according to Christ. “When Pete Westfall (now Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nordic) came into our showroom and told us how reliable Nordic was we thought ‘yeah, right’. But, we can count on our fingers the number of service claims we have had in the past 5 years with Nordic.”

Christ enjoys telling the story of how Westfall really hit it off with her dog, Gia, who happened to be in the store when Westfall came calling. “He gave Gia a squeaky rubber duck and we named it Mister Pete.  Gia and Mister Pete are inseparable. We’ve even given ‘Mister Petes’ to our friends pets too!” Christ states with a laugh.

What advice does Christ have for other dealers in the industry? “Take good care of your customers! They refer their friends!” says Christ. “The goodwill you generate with your customers will come back for sure! Listen to them and don’t confuse them with all kinds of information. Hit the price points they are shopping for.”
