Island Spas

Patrick Landry, owner of Island Spas in Burlington, Massachusetts, is one of those mechanical geniuses that can fix almost anything.  Eight years ago, as an owner of a hot tub, he enjoyed the relief and relaxation a hot water session gave him.  Then, when his hot tub needed a few repairs, he repaired it.  This turned out to be the beginning of Island Spas, where Landry repairs, refurbishes and resells used hot tubs out of his garage.  Last year he decided to expand his inventory by bringing in Nordic Hot Tubs as his ‘new’ inventory.

Landry operates Island Spas on a wholesale basis, without a dedicated showroom.  This business model allows him to keep prices down and devote more time to refurbishing, delivering and servicing hot tubs. “We feel this gives us a far better pricing and service advantage,” states Landry. “We service and deliver everything we sell and we give great after sale service!”

Being that Island Spas began as a hot tub re-sale operation, Landry states his biggest challenge was finding enough pre-owned inventory to keep in stock.  However, now that he is has added new models to the inventory the challenge has changed.   “Now we’re looking to improve our marketing strategy and, sincer we're currently working out of a 2400 square foot space, we need to find a larger, affordable location,” says Landry. “The location may turn out to be the biggest challenge.”

This year has already been a strong sales year for Island Spas. “Yes, but we are always looking to sell a larger volume of units,” states Landry. He knows that moving to a larger location will allow him to display more units and increase his sales.

One of the techniques Landry uses to increase his sales and fully use his current location is to host truckload sales. By bringing in a truckload of hot tubs he temporarily increases Island Spas inventory without making a permanent space commitment.  Landry’s customers benefit in that they can view a wider selection of hot tubs, purchase with discounted prices and enjoy a quick turnaround on delivery.

Nordic Hot Tubs have been a good fit for Island Spas. “I really like their simplicity, quality and reliability,” says Landry. “I don’t have to test Nordic’s when they come in and they don’t have field problems!”

When asked what advice he has for other dealers, he pauses. “I’m kind of new at the retail game but I do see that most pool and spa stores focus more on pools than spas. There is a lot of potential there so, I guess I would have to say don’t ignore that potential!”

Island Spas is hosting a Nordic Truckload Sale Event from April 28 – 30, 2017 at 83 Alexander Road, Unit 7 in Billerica, Massachusetts. Join Landry and the Island Spas Sales team at as they offer an expanded selection of hot tubs to choose from.

Holiday Pools and Spas

Posted in Dealer Spotlight

Holiday Pools and Spas has been a fixture in the Duncansville, Pennsylvania community for the past 28 years.  In 1989 Bob and Nancy Sutton founded Holiday Pools and Spas, building it into a premier pool and spa company.  Following Nancy’s untimely passing, Bob continued on in the business but, in 2016, he decided to sell the company.

In a random conversation with a mutual friend, Bob discovered that Mark and Kara Glova were moving back to the Duncansville area and possibly looking to purchase a business.  Many conversations ensued and in January 2017, Mark and Kara Glova officially took ownership of Holiday Pools.

Mark’s 15 year background in corporate sales and marketing has helped him streamline business operations.  He and Kara have also introduced new selling strategies for the sales team.  “Bob and Nancy had built a great staff and a huge, loyal customer base so stepping into this went surprisingly well,” states Mark.  “The Holiday Team has been very welcoming and accepting of Kara and I.  They embraced the changes we’ve made and have even begun to initiate further changes.”

Kara also has a solid background in business.  As a health and fitness trainer and business owner, she established Point of Fitness, a well-known training center in the Duncansville area.  In the fall of 2015 she sold Point of Fitness to concentrate on making Holiday Pools their family business.  Kara also has a Master’s Degree in Speech-Language Pathology.  She works with children part-time to provide Speech Therapy services.

Holiday Pools sells and installs above ground and the Ultimate In-Ground pools.  They carry two lines of hot tubs and they are a Platinum Dealer of Bio-Guard pool and spa chemicals.  While they employ 5 full-time team members during the off-season, the number swells to 12 during the pool building season. “We also offer a new and expanded maintenance program for our pool and hot tub customers,” says Mark. The full service program includes opening and closing pools for the season, regular cleaning of pools and a preventative maintenance program leaving the customer with only having to enjoy their pool or hot tub.

The operating philosophy of Holiday Pools is to turn moments into memories for their customers.  “We focus on getting families to re-engage with each other,” states Mark.  To accomplish this, he and his sales team spend a lot of time initially asking customers a number of questions.  “We find out what they want, what they need and can afford so the product purchased is the best possible fit. It’s important that the customer is completely educated about their purchase,” says Mark.  “We also follow up with detailed customer service after the sale.”

When asked what has been the biggest obstacle he faced as a business owner, Mark grins and states, “Coming in as new owners!”  He goes on to explain that the team at Holiday Pools made the transition very seamless.  “So, really that wasn’t an obstacle at all!  We have a great crew here!” says Mark with pride.

In the future, the Glovas  are entertaining the possibility of getting back into custom pool building. “But NOT right away…that would be way down the road,” Mark quickly adds.  “This year the focus is on meeting with all our customers; interacting with them in our showroom and at their location when we deliver their hot tubs, install their pools or help them with their chemicals.”

Holiday Pools has been a Nordic Dealer Partner for ten years and the Glovas are looking forward to many more.  “Nordic is so easy to work with and our rep, Jerry is great!” states Mark.  He goes on to say, “The hot tubs are relatively maintenance free and have the best warranty! Plus, Nordic hasn’t forgotten the therapeutic aspect of hot tubs.”

Although he is new to the business, Mark has this advice for other dealers, “Closely examine your inventory and carefully choose what you put in your showroom.  It’s not about the most profit; it’s about bringing in the best products for your customers.”

TAS Hearth and Home

Thomas and Dawn Sachs founded TAS Hearth & Patio twelve years ago as a hearth and stove business.  After a few years, they wanted to expand the business and saw the addition of hot tubs as a natural fit for their product lines.  Three years ago TAS added the Nordic line and they are happy they did! Currently, they have 4 full time and 2 part-time employees at their 2 locations in Oneonta and Cobleskill, New York.

What makes TAS Hearth and Patio special to their customers is the attention to detail and service. This is where Dawn says Nordic meshes so well with TAS.  “Nordic’s technical support is so easy to talk to and very responsive,” according to Dawn.

When asked what advice she could give to other businesses, dawn modestly says she isn’t one to give advice because each business is unique. However, she did add they are happy they are diversified by adding hot tubs and pools to their product lines.  Dawn indicated this has helped them sustain sales during the recent recession.

Dawn and Thomas are looking forward to 2017 as a great sales year for TAS Hearth and patio.
